Cavity and Core

This article describes the cavity and core, its processing method, and its arrangement into the mold. More reference like this are described in Mold-Making Handbook

Cavity and core

Core and cavity can be classified into 2 methods, integrated and nested method. You can choose which method will define your cavity and core.

Integrated: When the molded part is formed directly by the die.

Nested: When the molded part is formed by the die components.

Nested Cavity and Core

Benefits:

  • There is no restriction to the geometry of the molded part. Processing efficiency can be done when components are separated.
  • Mold materials can selected for better wear resistance and temperature control.
  • Damaged components can be replaces easily and cost effectively.

    • The difference is on their clamping mechanism.
The ram type is like hydraulic clamping where the mechanism involves a piston, a cylinder, and a fluid pumping into it.
On the other hand, the toggle type is a clamping mechanism in which linkage, motors and screws can be used as shown in the image shown here.

The ram type injection machine can have a very high tonnage depending on its piston diameter. But it is less energy efficient than the toggle type because the fluid continues to be pumped throughout the injection cycle.
The toggle type injection machine is only up to 2000 tons (I think) mainly due to the power capacity of the motor or the strength of its linkage. The linkage is only as strong as its weakest link. It is energy efficient because it consumes power only when the motor rotates.

  1. Being a student of Plastic Tech, I was very excited when I heard about this concept of Cavity and Core, N knowledge about ram and toggle type increased my excitement.

  2. Can you brief me about how to evaluate the mold design. In line with the cavity side, spure bush, hot bush, runner system, hot runner system, cavity steel, sprue, runner, gate, gate size and gate location, Sliders, angle pins, ejection form cavity side, cooling.

  3. I found this blog and this is great, very informative. Will learn how to use workbench Core & Cavity Design to create the
Core and Cavity sides of a part, including sliders and loose cores, required for the
design of a plastic injection mold. Thanks for sharing
