Injection molds are expensive if you want them to last for many years and produce large quantities without requiring maintenance, but most of the jobs we get are fairly small and the molds for them don’t cost that much.

You can order alignment pins, sprue bushings, and other components from Misumi. They have a very comprehensive mold components catalog called “FACE”. Futaba Moldbase have wide range of base selection. 3-plate mold design is not one-size-fit-all design, it depends on the product that you want to mold.
I can layout a 3-plate design for your product. You may send me the product drawing and I will send you a quote.

I’m retrofitting a CNC machine right now and when it’s complete, my first job will be making a mold assembly for producing a small plastic part (straight pull – no undercuts the first time around.)

Could you post a Solidworks (or .STEP file) of a a reasonably complex three-plate mold design such as the one on this page? Many online tutorials exist that don’t do much beyond posting a 3D picture with only a few arrows pointing at key items. I would like to see for example if you used off-the-shelf parts such as alignment pins and sprue bushings, how you designed the sprues and gates, what the tolerances are, and how the ejector plate engages at the end of the platen travel. In other words, I’d like a reference design from which to base new designs.

Your welcome! China does have a lot of injection molders, right? I think China, like India, have courses in college about injection molding and mold manufacturing.
